Pan-STARRS (IMAGE) University of Pittsburgh Caption For the Pan-STARRS large survey, a refrigerator-sized 1.4 billion-pixel camera -- the world's most powerful -- nightly snaps pictures of a swath of sky six times wider than the moon. Such expansive images capture a range of cosmic activity, from the Universe’s expansion to the savage interaction of stars and black holes. This image, just 1/100th of the Pan-STARRS camera’s field of view, shows three spiral galaxies, distant galaxy clusters (yellow), and stars in the Milky Way (blue-white and red).
