The review starts with the emphasis on the importance and advantages of hyperbolic metamaterials. In the main text, theory for realization of hyperbolic metamaterials are described, followed by applications of hyperbolic metamaterials of high resolution optical imaging and nanoscale lithography, light propagation and manipulation, emission engineering, sensors, absorbers, and natural hyperbolic metamaterial. The review concludes by suggesting perspectives and outlook.
