Blue bars in (a) show the large range of uncertainty in observations of snowpack for the Columbia River basin in the Western U.S. In (b) snow drought uncertainty is used to make better forecasts of droughts the following summer (blue), relative to predictions that do not consider snow (red line), or predictions from any one dataset or snow drought definition (black symbols).
