New technique may lead to safer stem cell transplants (IMAGE)

Studying mice, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have developed a method of stem cell transplantation that does not require radiation or chemotherapy. Above, the right panel shows mouse bone marrow after the debilitating effects of radiation followed by an infusion of donor T cells that attack the bone marrow. The left panel shows mouse bone marrow following the newly developed immunotherapeutic approach. In this case, the donor T cells do not damage the recipient's bone marrow.
