A quasi-two-dimensional crystal placed between contacts is excited by a laser pulse (red). In the irradiated region its physical properties can change dramatically on ultrashort, femtosecond time scales. This can lead to light-induced superconductivity, switching between insulating and metallic phases, or novel Floquet topological states with unusual charge transport properties.
