Image Segmentation (IMAGE) DOE/Sandia National Laboratories Caption An illustration used by Sandia National Laboratories researchers to show the uncertainty of drawing boundaries in scanned images used for high-consequence computer simulations. The gray-scale image on the left is a scan of material used as a thermal barrier. The illustrated image on the right shows the material segmented into two classes (blue and purple). The black lines show one possible interface boundary between the two classes of material. The yellow region depicts the segmentation uncertainty, meaning the black lines could be drawn anywhere within that area and still be valid.
