Solar-powered microbes to feed the world? (IMAGE)
Caption
Currently, agriculture uses energy from the Sun to convert carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen into valuable proteins via plants and livestock. A new food system that incorporates solar-powered microbial production could substantially increase protein supply while using less land and preventing fertilisers from polluting the environment.
