Trapped Magma May Be in 'Simmer' Mode Most of the Time (2 of 6)

Mt. Tarawera volcano in New Zealand. The 0.7 thousand year old Kaharoa eruption produced rhyolitic lava flows (domes) which formed the hills pictured. These domes were split by a fissure which was the vent for the 1886 basaltic eruption. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the 16 June 2017, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by A.E. Rubin at University of California, Davis in Davis, CA, and colleagues was titled, 'Rapid cooling and cold storage in a silicic magma reservoir recorded in individual crystals.'
