Prof. Larry Bonassar of the Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering at Cornell University describes a new, biomaterials-based approach to repairing herniated discs. His team developed a two-part injection to both reinflate and patch herniated discs, restoring the mechanical function and preventing further degeneration. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Mar. 11, 2020, issue of Science Translational Medicine, published by AAAS. The paper, by S.R. Sloan at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY; and colleagues was titled, "Combined nucleus pulposus augmentation and annulus fibrosus repair prevents acute intervertebral disc degeneration after discectomy."
