A 3-D Flyby of Tropical Depression 9 (IMAGE) NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Caption This is a 3-D flyby of developing Tropical Depression 9 in the Gulf of Mexico. The GPM core observatory satellite scanned the tropical depression on Aug. 31, 2016, at 2:46 a.m. EDT and saw heavy rainfall occurring northwest of Cuba. GPM found that some of these storms were dropping rain at a rate of greater than 4.1 inches (105 mm) per hour.
