Phase Changes at the Center of the Earth (IMAGE)
Caption
An image of the axial vortex tubes generated by a computer simulation of a stratified convection in the Earth's core. Clockwise vortices are in blue, counter-clockwise in red. Structural boundary is represented by a transparent gray region. A central sphere is the inner core. The upper part of the core is cut away for clarity. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the Nov. 11, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Dr. H. Ozawa of Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology in Kanagawa, Japan, and colleagues, was titled, "Phase Transition of FeO and Stratification in Earth's Outer Core."
