This is a Golden Pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus). Closeup is of the tail region of a male specimen. Like an artist's canvas, the planar structure of feathers enable the display of fine ornaments and various forms in great detail. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the 24 Oct. 2014 issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by M.-C. Koschowitz at University of Bonn in Bonn, Germany, and colleagues was titled, "Beyond the rainbow."
