Figure 1 (IMAGE) Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Caption (Left up panel) Effect of biosynthetic gene cluster muf or mutanofactin-697 (5) on biofilm formation on the surface of artificial acryl teeth. (Left bottom panel) Proposed biosynthetic pathway for mutanofactin-697 (5). (Right panel) Proposed mechanism for mutanofactin-697 (5)-promoted biofilm formation of streptococci. After being biosynthesized and secreted from a producing streptococcus, 5 binds to self and neighboring streptococci, forming surface layers around bacterial cells. The hydrophobic layer increases bacterial cell surface hydrophobicity, promotes initial bacterial adhesion and subsequent biofilm formation and maturation. In addition, 5 also directly binds to eDNA and facilities eDNA-mediated cell aggregation and biofilm formation.
