Bacterial symbionts (Burkholderia gladioli) inhabit glands in the reproductive system of Lagria villosa beetles. The fluorescently labeled bacteria are shown in yellow, insect host cell nuclei in blue. The bacteria produce antibiotics that protect beetle eggs from mold fungi.
