Plastic microbeads (< 1 mm in size) used in a variety of cosmetic products are small enough to pass through wastewater treatment and enter the marine environment. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the 11 July, 2014, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Kara Law and Richard Thompson at the Plymouth University in Plymouth, UK, was titled, 'Microplastics in the seas.'
