Caption
An electrothermally-powered "breathing" textile driven by inserting a two-ply, coiled 430 μm diameter silver-plated nylon 6,6 muscle inside a conventional braid. Electrothermal heating drives a porosity change of the braid. This video relates to a paper that appeared in the Feb. 21, 2014, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Carter S. Haines at the University of Texas at Dallas in Richardson, Texas, and colleagues was titled, "Artificial Muscles from Fishing Line and Sewing Thread."
