K.C. Schuette, University of Houston (IMAGE) University of Houston Caption Chemical engineering student K.C. Schuette conducts research on sickle cell anemia in the lab of engineering professor Peter Vekilov at the University of Houston. In this photo, he is using fluorescent microscopy to observe the fluorescent dye, Rhodamine B (RhB), which varies its fluorescent intensity at different temperatures to create a temperature-fluorescent intensity calibration curve so that the researchers may use the fluorescence of RhB to determine the temperature of their micro-heater. The image on the computer is what the microscope sees. RhB absorbs green light and emits red light and the image is the red fluorescent light being emitted.
