Wildfires in Russia's Tuva Republic

Wildfires are burning in the Tuva Republic of Russia. This natural-color satellite image was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra satellite on June 29, 2015. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS's thermal bands, are outlined in red.

The Tuva Republic is a federal subject of Russia, and is located in southern Siberia and bordered by Mongolia to the south. The Tuva Republic is also the geographical center of Asia. To the east of the Tuva Republic lies Mongolia's Lake Khovsgol (right) which is appears vertical in the image. Mongolia's Lake Uva is southwest of the Tuva Republic (bottom left) and has a rounded shape.
