Changes of Ketone Body Utilization States in the Heart (IMAGE)
Caption
(A) Ketone bodies (acetoacetic acid, β hydroxybutyric acid) are typically decomposed into acetyl CoA in the mitochondria and become energy sources through the citric acid cycle.
(B) Under myocardial ischemic conditions, where anaerobic metabolism is accelerated and lactic acid production is increased, ketone bodies cannot be used because the mitochondrial function, which requires oxygen, is impaired.
