The sampling device, a 120-cm-long corer with sharpened tip and plastic tubes, collects each humus profile. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the March 29, 2013, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Karina Clemmensen at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden, and colleagues was titled, "Roots and Associated Fungi Drive Long-Term Carbon Sequestration in Boreal Forest."
