Newly Discovered Supernova Outshines All Others (4 of 4) (IMAGE)
Caption
The light curves of ASASSN-15lh and other supernovae for comparison. At maximum, ASASSN-15lh is about 200 times more powerful than a typical Type Ia supernova, and it is more than twice as luminous as the previous record-holding supernova, named iPTF13ajg. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Jan. 15, 2016 issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by S. Dong at Peking University in Beijing, China, and colleagues was titled, 'ASASSN-15lh: A highly super-luminous supernova.'
