This is an electron micrograph of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the macrophage, its host cell. The bacteria resides inside the cell in a compartment that does not fuse with the lysosome, the degradative vacuole of the macrophage. This preparation has been pulsed with gold particles which is visible in the lysosome but not in the bacteria-containing compartment. This image relates to an article that appeared in the May 14, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The Review, by Dr. David Russell of Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and colleagues, is titled, "Tuberculosis: What We Don’t Know Can, and Does, Hurt Us."
