The tissue-engineered ray propelled by producing forward thrust via the undulatory motion of its fins as calcium waves propagated. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the July 8, 2016 issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by S.-J. Park at Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering in Cambridge, MA, and colleagues was titled, "Phototactic guidance of a tissue-engineered soft-robotic ray."
