These prey items were collected from the beaks of nestling songbirds. Spiders made up 25% of most birds' diets but delivered 75% of the mercury. This image relates to article that appeared in the April 18, 2008 issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Daniel A. Cristol of the College of William and Mary and colleagues, was titled "The Movement of Aquatic Mercury Through Terrestrial Food Webs."
