New Component in Chromosome-Protecting Enzyme (1 of 2) (IMAGE)
Caption
Telomerase localizes to Cajal bodies, but how this localization is controlled and the composition of the telomerase holoenzyme remain incompletely understood. Venteicher et al. report the identification of a new protein component of active telomerase, TCAB1, which binds the telomerase protein dyskerin. Although dyskerin (red) localizes to both nucleoli and Cajal bodies, TCAB1 (green) is found specifically in Cajal bodies, a site of telomerase accumulation. TCAB1 is required for telomerase trafficking to Cajal bodies and is essential for telomere synthesis by telomerase. This image accompanied the report "A Human Telomerase Holoenzyme Protein Required for Cajal Body Localization and Telomere Synthesis," by Dr. Venteicher et. al. appearing in the Jan. 30, 2009, issue of Science.
