Nerve Cells Help Generate Salivary Glands (1 of 5) (IMAGE)
Caption
The parasympathetic nerves of a developing salivary gland innervate the salivary gland epithelium which is essential for organogenesis. The image shows a single projection of a stack of optical sections of an E14 mouse salivary gland. Colors have been altered for artistic purposes. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Sept. 24, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. S. M. Knox of National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., and colleagues was titled, "Parasympathetic Innervation Maintains Epithelial Progenitor Cells During Salivary Organogenesis."
