This is a schematic of the device, which is submerged in an ionic liquid. A positive electrode (not shown) draws away the negative ions in this liquid, leaving the positively-charged ions (plus signs) to induce a dense layer of electrons in the (lavender-shaded) strontium titanate layer beneath.
