Melillo et al. have found that carbon emissions from land-use change caused by the displacement of food crops and pastures by a global biofuels program may be twice as much as emissions from lands directly devoted to biofuels production. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Oct. 22, 2009, issue of Science Express, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. J. M. Melillo of Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass. and colleagues, was titled, "Indirect Emissions from Biofuels: How Important?"
