Tiny Pieces of Light (5 of 9) (IMAGE)
Caption
Specifically designed chirped mirrors for the compression of light pulses in the channels of the light field synthesizer (foreground) enable the controlled reduction of the pulse duration close to their physical limit and already create few cycle laser pulses in the individual channels. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Sept. 8, 2011, issue of Science Express, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. A. Wirth of Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik in Garching, Germany, and colleagues was titled, "Synthesized Light Transients."
