The image depicts a view into the developing foregut of a mouse embryo at eight days gestation. The red domains indicate cells in which transforming growth factor beta signaling has been activated, resulting in the phosphorylation of the transcription factor Smad2. E. Wandzioch and K. Zaret found that such signaling restricts the induction of pancreas and liver progenitor cells. This image relates to an article that appeared in the June 26, 2009, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. E. Wandzioch of the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Pa., and colleagues was titled, "Dynamic Signaling Network for the Specification of Embryonic Pancreas and Liver Progenitors".
