Cichlids (IMAGE) University of Bonn Caption Usually develop conspicuous coloration after about 200 days at the onset of sexual maturity. But this is delayed in animals that feel threatened by predators. The image shows the development of male (top) and female (bottom) Pelvicachromis taeniatus at the six developmental stages examined in the present study. As sexes are not distinguishable during the first two developmental stages, only one individual is shown.
