Exoplanet Discovery from Next-Gen Gemini Planet Imager (1 of 4) (IMAGE)
Caption
An artistic conception of the Jupiter-like exoplanet, 51 Eri b, seen in the near-infrared light that shows the hot layers deep in its atmosphere glowing through clouds. Because of its young age, this young cousin of our own Jupiter is still hot and carries information on the way it was formed 20 million years ago. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the August 14, 2015 issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by B. Macintosh at Stanford University in Stanford, CA, and colleagues was titled, 'Discovery and spectroscopy of the young Jovian planet 51 Eri b with the Gemini Planet Imager.'
