More Accurate Estimates of Great Ape Populations Will Inform Conservation Efforts (13 of 13)

Buka, a silverback gorilla in Republic of Congo's Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park. Researchers now estimate that there are more than 360,000 western lowland gorillas in the wild, approximately one third higher than earlier figures. However, those same populations are declining by 2.7 percent annually. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the 25 April 2018, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by S. Strindberg at Wildlife Conservation Society in New York, NY, and colleagues was titled, "Guns, germs, and trees determine density and distribution of gorillas and chimpanzees in Western Equatorial Africa."
