New Iron Oxide Offers Clues to Chemistry in Earth's Mantle (1 of 1) (IMAGE)
Caption
The structure of Fe 5O 6, a new iron oxide. The trigonal prisms representing the coordination environment of iron in the 4c position are shown in yellow. Layers of edge-sharing coordination octahedra of iron in the 8f positions are shown in two shades of blue representing two non-equivalent crystallographic sites. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the June 26, 2015, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by B. Lavina at University of Nevada, Las Vegas in Las Vegas, NV and colleagues was titled, ' Unraveling the complexity of iron oxides at high pressure and temperature: Synthesis of Fe 5O 6."
