The Atmospheres of Hot Jupiters (VIDEO)
Caption
Time-lapse video of WASP-43b over one planet rotation. The left and right panels display the planet's emission spectrum and temperature structure, respectively, as a function of orbital phase (similar to planet longitude). The rotating spheres depict temperature maps of WASP-43b at three different altitudes. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Oct. 10, 2014, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by K.B. Stevenson at University of Chicago in Chicago, IL, and colleagues was titled, 'Thermal structure of an exoplanet atmosphere from phase-resolved emission spectroscopy.'
