After observing the behaviors of customers in cafes in several modern Chinese cities, researchers report that people from rice-growing regions showed interdependent behaviors, like sitting in groups or squeezing themselves through narrowly placed chairs, whereas people from wheat-growing regions more often displayed individualistic behaviors, sitting alone or actively moving chairs that blocked their way. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the 25 April 2018, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by T. Talhelm at University of Chicago Booth School of Business in Chicago, IL, and colleagues was titled, "Moving chairs in Starbucks: Observational studies find rice-wheat cultural differences in daily life in China."
