This is an aerial photo of Puu Oo cinder-and-splatter cone on the east rift zone of Kilauea. The Puu Oo-Kupaianaha eruption at Kilauea has been ongoing since 1983. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Dec. 4 issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. C.J. Wolfe at University of Hawaii at Manoa in Honolulu, Hawaii, and colleagues, was titled, "Mantle Shear-Wave Velocity Structure Beneath the Hawaiian Hot Spot."
