The first structures of wildtype and mutated BRCA1, the breast cancer susceptibility protein, were reconstructed from electron microscopy images taken at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Sept. 20, 2017, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by Y. Liang at Virginia Tech in Roanoke, VA, and colleagues was titled, 'Structural analysis of BRCA1 reveals modification hot spot.'
