Virus Gene Leads Moths to Tree-Top Doom (5 of 9) (IMAGE)
Caption
Typical scene during an outbreak that is terminated by an epizootic (collapse of population by virus disease). Here, older gypsy moth caterpillars that are close to pupation are manipulated by the virus to die on the bark, where they may be surrounded by siblings that escaped infection and who will molt to the pupal stage in this same location. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Sept. 9, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. K. Hoover of the Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pa., and colleagues was titled, "A Gene for an Extended Phenotype."
