Polar Ice Sheets Losing Mass, Several Methods Show (30 of 32) (IMAGE)
Caption
This image shows the grounded ice margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet just to the south of Jakobshavn Isbrae near the town of Ilulissat. The ice sheet sheds mass in this region through in situ melting, as opposed to marine terminating glaciers where mass is lost primarily by iceberg calving. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the Nov. 30, 2012, issue of Science Express, published by AAAS. The paper, by Ian Joughin at the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash. and colleagues was titled, "Ice-Sheet Response to Oceanic Forcing."
