Peripheral cells (in red) act as a niche that regulates the development of intestinal cells (in green) during organagenesis of the gut. The peripheral cells extend long cellular processes around the nuclei of gut precursors to prevent their differentiation. This image relates to an article that appeared in the January 8, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Divya Mathur of the Columbia University Medical Center in New York, N.Y., and colleagues, was titled, "A Transient Niche Regulates the Specification of Drosophila Intestinal Stem Cells."
