Arctic Buoys (IMAGE) Office of Naval Research Caption Air crewmen load an Air-Deployable Expendable Ice Beacon buoy onto a Royal Danish Air Force C-130 aircraft at Thule Air Force Base in Greenland, in preparation for deployment in the high Arctic as part of the International Arctic Buoy Program (IABP). The deployment team included personnel from the Office of Naval Research, National Ice Center, Office of the Oceanographer of the Navy, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and the University of Washington. The IABP is composed of member groups that place and maintain drifting buoys throughout the Arctic -- and offer meteorological and oceanographic data for scientific research.
