The Ferret Returns 1 (of 4) (IMAGE)
Caption
The black-footed ferret-North America's most endangered mammal-is a prairie dog obligate. Prairie dogs and their burrow systems are used as food and shelter by the ferret. Experts believed the species to extinct before it was rediscovered in Wyoming. Reintroduced populations are now thriving in Shirely Basin, Wyo. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Aug. 10, 2007, issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Martin B. Grenier and colleagues of the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyo., was titled "Rapid Population Growth of a Critically Endangered Carnivore."
