Extraction process using a microneedle patch

Schematic representation of the extraction process using the microneedle patch. A) The microneedle patch is applied to the skin. B) Cross section of the outer layer of skin with the interstitial fluid and metabolites (circles) below it. The patch is pressed against the skin, the needles penetrate into the interstitial layer and the fluid is absorbed into the needles. C) The patch is removed and placed into a tube with deionized water. The metabolites diffuse into the water and the tube is centrifuged to separate the needles.
