The Informational Posters & Graphics People's Choice is 'Transmission Electron Microscopy: Structure, Function and 3D Reconstruction.' Visualization is an essential research component when trying to understand the complex pathogenesis of infectious diseases at the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Integrated Research Facility in Frederick, MD. For example, transmission electron microscopy is the most effective method of determining the general morphology of a filovirus particle. 2D and 3D TEM data in conjunction with volumetric data from the Protein Data Bank can further illuminate virus structure. This poster depicts the structure and function of the TEM and its 3D reconstruction capabilities. The poster was illustrated, designed and written by Fabian de Kok-Mercado and the 2D and 3D TEM data he used to create the PDB virus assembly were collected by Victoria Wahl-Jensen. Portions of the draft poster text were provided by Laura Bollinger. (This work was performed under Battelle Memorial Institute contract HHSN272200200016I w/ NIAID). This image relates to a paper that appeared in the Feb. 03, 2012, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper was titled, “2011 International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge.”
