Why HIV Patients Are So Susceptible to Salmonella (2 of 2) (IMAGE)
Caption
Antibody (green, panel B) in HIV-infected serum binds to Salmonella (blue), leading to deposition of complement (green, panel E) without killing of Salmonella. MacLennan and colleagues (Science, April 23, 2010) found that this was because of high levels of antibody targeting lipopolysaccharide on the surface of Salmonella. This image relates to an article that appeared in the April 23, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Calman MacLennan of University of Birmingham in Birmingham, UK, and colleagues, was titled, "Dysregulated Humoral Immunity to Nontyphoidal Salmonella in HIV-Infected African Adults."
