This is an illustration of spin density on an Ag33 cluster. Density functional calculations suggest that direct oxidation of propylene on small Ag clusters enabled by lower energy pathways involving a spin magnetic electron structure. This image relates to an article that appeared in the April 9, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Y. Lei of Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Ill., was titled, "Increased Silver Activity for Direct Propylene Epoxidation via Subnanometer Size Effects."
