On Sept. 29 at 21:39 UTC (5:39 p.m. EDT) GPM showed a large area of very intense rain with rain rates ranging from around 50 to 132 mm/hour (~2 to 5 inches, shown in red and magenta) to the right of Joaquin's center. Tall convective towering clouds reached up to 16.3 km/10.1 miles (shown in orange).
