Micro-CT Scan of a Fin Whale VGB Nerve Core (VIDEO)
Caption
This video shows a micro-CT scan of a fin whale VGB nerve core. Fin whale nerve taken from the ventral groove blubber imaged in a micro-CT scan. The large outer sheath has been removed with software to reveal the inner core. The tortuous path of the nerve core resembles a river meander, but the core wanders in three dimensions. This core could lengthen by 76% just by straightening out. Nerve fascicles can be seen inside the core. They are also wavy, but at a smaller length scale than the core. The core is 2 mm wide.
