At fault: This is a perspective view of subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate under southwest Japan. The blue zone with red dots shows the location tremor and slow earthquakes under Shikoku, shallower orange area is the dangerous, locked zone that last ruptured in two large earthquakes in 1944 and 1946. This image accompanied the report "Deep Tremors and Slow Quakes," by G.C. Beroza and S. Ide appearing in the May 22, 2009, issue of Science.
